Subwhere Berlin – Datenschutzerklärung

Zuletzt aktualisiert: 15. Oktober 2026 · English version below

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 October 2026

Subwhere Berlin ("the app", "Subwhere" on the Home Screen) shows Berlin's U-Bahn trains on a map and in augmented reality (AR). It is developed and provided by AppLand (Stefan Almqvist, Sweden), the controller under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In short

  • The app collects no personal data. We don't see who you are, where you are or how you use the app.
  • No account, no sign-in, no ads, no tracking, no analytics.
  • Your location and the camera are used on your device only.

Location

The app uses your location to place the trains relative to you, show how far away a train is and find your nearest station. This is worked out on your device only. Your location is never sent to us or to anyone else, and never stored as a history.

Widget: if you use the widget without pinning a station, it uses your location to show the departures at your nearest station, even when the app is closed. This too happens on the device only.

You can change location access at any time in iOS Settings. The map works without it; AR and "Closest station" need it.

Camera and AR

For AR the app uses the camera through Apple's ARKit. Camera images are processed on the device and are neither stored nor sent to us. To find its place, ARKit's geotracking downloads Apple Maps localisation data for your surroundings; Apple receives no camera images. Apple's privacy policy applies.

Map

The map is Apple Maps (MapKit), which loads map tiles for the area shown. Apple's privacy policy applies.

Data on your device

The app keeps on your device (in an App Group store shared with the widget, and in the app's settings):

  • the list of stations, so the widget can find the nearest one,
  • the departures it loaded last and the station they belong to,
  • when the live data went down (if it has),
  • your language choice (German or English),
  • whether you have seen the introduction.

This data never leaves your device and is deleted when you delete the app.

Live data

Timetables and live delays come from the open data of Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB). The app doesn't fetch them from VBB directly but through an AppLand service on Cloudflare, which fetches the data from VBB, stores it and passes it on to the app. VBB therefore never sees your IP address.

  • The app asks only for network-wide data (all trains, line status), the same for everyone.
  • Only the widget asks about one station: the one you pinned or, by default, the one nearest you. The request names the station, not your location.
  • Requests carry no account, identifier or coordinates.
  • We keep no logs of the requests.
  • Cloudflare processes your IP address to make the connection (legitimate interest in providing the service, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare's privacy policy applies.

TestFlight

If you test the app through TestFlight, Apple shares crash reports and any feedback you choose to send with us, with your email address if you include it. We use these only to improve the app and to reply to you.

Email

If you email us, we use your address and message only to reply to you.

Permissions

  • Location (while using the app) – placing trains, finding your nearest station; also for the widget.
  • Camera – AR.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13. It collects no personal data from anyone.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. As we hold no personal data about you, there is usually nothing to give you or delete, but you are welcome to write to us. You can also complain to a supervisory authority, such as Sweden's Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY) or the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

Not affiliated

Subwhere Berlin is not affiliated with or endorsed by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) or Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB).

Changes

If this policy changes, we update it on this page and the date above.
