Subwhere Sydney — Privacy Policy
Effective 12 October 2026
Subwhere Sydney ("Subwhere" on the Home Screen) is an iPhone and iPad app by AppLand, a one-person developer in Sweden. It shows Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro trains in augmented reality and on a map, with departure boards and a widget.
In short: the app collects no personal data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Your location and camera are used on your device only.
What the app uses, and where it stays
Location. The app uses your location to show the trains around you, to find your nearest station and, in the widget's nearest-station mode, to choose which station's departures to show. Your location is used on your device and is never sent to AppLand or to Transport for NSW.
Camera. The camera shows the augmented-reality view. Camera images stay on your device. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.
Apple's services. To place trains in augmented reality, the app uses ARKit's location anchors. ARKit downloads Apple Maps localisation data for the area around you and matches it against the camera image on the device; Apple says no camera images are sent to Apple for this. The map view uses Apple Maps. Apple's handling of these requests is covered by Apple's own privacy policy.
On your device. The app keeps the station list, the latest departures for your nearest or chosen station and the time the live data last failed, in storage shared with the widget. None of this leaves your device, and deleting the app deletes it.
The live data
Train times, positions and service alerts come from the Transport for NSW Open Data Hub (licensed under CC BY 4.0). Your device never contacts Transport for NSW. It asks AppLand's own service, which runs on Cloudflare, so Transport for NSW never sees your IP address. AppLand's service fetches the data from Transport for NSW with AppLand's key, combines it, and passes it on.
What the app sends to AppLand's service:
- requests for the current trains, the service alerts and departure boards;
- a departure-board request names the station it is for: your nearest station (for the station badge and the widget's nearest-station mode) or the station you chose.
The requests carry no account, name, device identifier or coordinates. As with any web request, Cloudflare receives your IP address in order to deliver it. AppLand keeps no logs of requests or IP addresses.
TestFlight
If you test a pre-release version through TestFlight, Apple shares with AppLand the information described in Apple's TestFlight terms, such as your name and email address as a tester, crash reports and any feedback you choose to send. AppLand uses it only to improve the app.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone.
Your rights
Because the app collects no personal data, AppLand holds nothing about you to access, correct or delete. If you have a question or a concern, contact AppLand below. You can also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY, imy.se) or, in Australia, to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC, oaic.gov.au).
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
