Questions

What is Subwhere?

Subwhere is an augmented reality (AR) app that shows subway trains moving underground in real time. Point your phone at the ground and you see the trains passing beneath you, at the depth they actually run.

How do I use Subwhere?
  1. Go outside. Use Subwhere above ground, near a subway line. Underground, on the platform, there's nothing for AR to recognise.
  2. Open the app and tap Tap to Start. The first time, allow location access so Subwhere can place the trains relative to where you're standing and find your nearest station. Your location stays on your phone.
  3. Let it find you. While it says Locating you, hold the phone up toward the buildings and street around you. Subwhere works out exactly where you are by recognising buildings and sky.
  4. Look down. When it says Locked in, tilt the phone toward the ground and watch the trains pass beneath you. Tap a train to see its line, speed, depth and any delay.
  5. No fix? Move to a spot with more buildings in view and tap Try Again. If AR isn't mapped where you are, try another spot, or tap Show Map: the live map works anywhere, even underground.

Tip: add the Subwhere widget to your home screen to see the next departures from your nearest station.

Which cities does Subwhere cover?

Stockholm, London, Paris, Berlin, New York, Tokyo, Sydney and Hong Kong. Each city has its own app named after the city, for example Subwhere London. The list above shows which ones you can download now.

How does Subwhere know where the trains are?

Subwhere uses each operator's official open data: timetables, live delays and arrival predictions, depending on what the city publishes. Each train is placed along the real track, so what you see matches what is running right now.

What do I need to use Subwhere?

An iPhone with iOS 18.6 or later, or an Android phone that supports Google ARCore, and an internet connection for live data. AR works above ground, where the phone can see the buildings around you. Underground, use the live map.

Is Subwhere made by a transit operator?

No. Subwhere is an independent app made by AppLand. It uses public open transit data and is not affiliated with any transit operator.

Does Subwhere cost money?

Each Subwhere city app is a paid app with a one-time price. There is no subscription.
